Think about your middle as a long vessel through which various muscles collaborate to keep you looking incline. Your transversus abdominis, the deepest abs, works with the others to hold in your more level gut. Your erector spinae, the muscles that connect on your spine, straighten your carriage and can make you feel (and seem) taller, while your rectus abdominis and obliques are the solid and adaptable muscles that permit your appendages to move uninhibitedly.
